Let me tell you a little more about kettlebell exercises. The beginner movements include a kettlebell squat, press, and even row. But more importantly, you can move into kettlebell swings (amazing for increasing your heart rate and fitness), and kettlebell snatches – perhaps one of the most all-round exercises you can do with a single piece of equipment. More about that in a second.
First, you’re probably wondering, “Can’t I just a dumbbell to do to the same exercises as you recommend with a kettlebell?” And the answer is yes, just like you can wear a hat to keep the rain off your head instead of using an umbrella, but it just won’t work as well.
If you want all of the fat burning and cardio conditioning benefits of those powerful exercises, such as the swing and snatch, then you will be better off with a kettlebell. Now there’s nothing magic about a kettlebell, but it is designed specifically for those exercises. Dumbbells are awkward, and may lead to overuse injuries if you try to replicate these amazing kettlebell exercises.
Better Results with Kettlebells
The kettlebell is a ball shaped piece of equipment with a handle that is built to move freely within your grip during the dynamic snatches and swings, and that is it’s one great advantage. You’ll simply get better results and have more fun – while working out at home – with a kettlebell.
In fact, my favorite thing to do in Spring, Summer, and Fall is to take my kettlebell outside, where I’ll do a workout of two-hand swings for warm-up, then 1-arm snatches for strength, followed by 1-arm swings for conditioning. On other days I might do 1-arm presses for strength followed by 2-hand kettlebell swings for conditioning.
And because I have more than just one kettlebell, I can also do renegade rows, a powerful exercise for your abs that doesn’t involve harmful sit-ups or crunches. Add in kettlebell cleans and the unique “Turkish Get-up” (a total body movement that works your abs), you’ll have multiple kettlebell exercises for doing unique fat burning workouts at home in just a tiny amount of space.
When you are getting started, you’ll want to start with a single light kettlebell. For women, this ranges between 12 and 18 pounds. For men, a 35-pound kettlebell is often recommended. You’ll find these pieces of equipment in your local sports stores or online. Some gyms may even have them.
Actually, most gyms now carry kettlebells.
So the great news is that you can give up the stinky gym, and forego the dishonor of doing long, slow cardio (which doesn’t work for fat loss), and you can switch to kettlebell exercises done in the comfort of your own home, or outside in the sunshine and fresh air.
You’re fat burning workouts are about to get a whole lot more enjoyable – and effective – as you switch from the elliptical to the kettlebell.
